Through the Rabbit Hole
Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this costume design project explores the relationship between imagination, transformation, and visual storytelling. Developed for a children's theatre production, the project investigates how costume can help construct a fantastical world while supporting character development and performance.
The design process began with research into the original story, theatrical adaptations, and visual interpretations of Wonderland. I was particularly interested in the sense of curiosity and discovery that defines Alice’s journey, and how these themes could be translated into costume. Through colour, silhouette, texture, and character analysis, I developed designs that balanced recognisable elements of the original narrative with a contemporary theatrical approach.
As the story moves between reality and fantasy, the costumes were designed to reflect this shifting atmosphere. Playful shapes, contrasting proportions, and expressive details were used to create a sense of wonder while maintaining functionality for performance. Each costume aimed to support both the visual identity of the character and the overall world-building of the production.
The project allowed me to explore costume as a tool for storytelling, demonstrating how clothing can communicate personality, emotion, and narrative without relying on dialogue alone. Through the process, I developed a deeper understanding of costume design for performance and the role visual design plays in shaping audience experience.
