A Gender Made of Fluid
Flim
A Gender Made of Fluid is an immersive moving image and installation project that explores identity through the metaphor of water. Inspired by the changing forms of rivers, lakes, and oceans, the work examines how identity is continuously shaped by experience, environment, and personal perception rather than existing as a fixed state.
The project began with an interest in fluidity—not only as a physical characteristic of water, but also as a way of understanding the complexities of human experience. Water can be still or turbulent, contained or expansive, transparent or reflective. It constantly adapts to its surroundings while maintaining its essence. This ability to transform became the starting point for exploring questions of identity, belonging, and self-definition.
Through moving image, projection, sound, and spatial design, the work creates an immersive environment where viewers are invited to move through a landscape of images and reflections. Water appears in different forms throughout the project, interacting with containers, bodies, and architectural space. These visual elements investigate the relationship between individual experience and external structures, questioning the boundaries that attempt to define and contain identity.
The installation combines projected imagery, layered sound, and spatial composition to create an atmosphere that encourages contemplation rather than providing direct answers. Rather than presenting a single narrative, the work offers a series of visual and emotional encounters, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations and connections.
Through this project, I explored how moving image and installation can be used to create sensory experiences that communicate ideas beyond language. A Gender Made of Fluid ultimately reflects on transformation, uncertainty, and the possibility of embracing identities that remain open, evolving, and difficult to define.
